Whether you’re selling a car, transferring registration, or re-registering a vehicle that has been off the road, a roadworthy certificate in Cranbourne is a legal requirement in Victoria — and getting one should be straightforward, honest, and stress-free. As a VicRoads-licensed inspection station, our workshop carries out thorough roadworthy inspections for all makes and models, provides clear defect reports if anything needs attention, and can complete most on-site repairs before re-testing on the same day. No runaround, no surprises.
What is a roadworthy certificate and when do you need one?
A roadworthy certificate (RWC) — also referred to as a Certificate of Roadworthiness in Victoria — is an official document issued by a licensed vehicle tester confirming that a vehicle meets the minimum safety standards required to operate on Victorian roads. The certificate does not mean the car is in perfect mechanical condition; it means the specific safety-related components inspected were found to meet the required standard at the time of inspection.
You are required to obtain a roadworthy certificate in Victoria in the following situations:
- When selling a registered vehicle to another person — the seller is responsible for providing a current RWC
- When transferring vehicle ownership — the buyer cannot transfer registration without a valid RWC
- When re-registering a vehicle that has been off the road (cancelled or lapsed registration)
- When re-registering an interstate vehicle in Victoria for the first time
- When a vehicle has been significantly modified and requires re-inspection
- When directed to obtain one by VicRoads or Victoria Police following a defect notice
It is important to note that a roadworthy certificate is not required for your annual vehicle registration renewal in Victoria — that process is separate. However, if you receive a defect notice or your vehicle has been involved in certain incidents, VicRoads or police may direct you to obtain one before the vehicle can be used on public roads again.

What does a roadworthy inspection check?
A Victorian roadworthy inspection covers a defined set of safety-related components as prescribed by VicRoads. The inspection focuses specifically on the parts of your vehicle that directly affect safety on the road — it is not a full mechanical check or a comprehensive service, and it does not assess the general condition or value of the vehicle.
The following areas are inspected as part of every roadworthy certificate at our Cranbourne workshop:
|
Brake pad and shoe thickness, disc and drum condition, brake lines, handbrake operation and effectiveness |
|
Tread depth (minimum 1.5mm), tyre condition and sidewall integrity, wheel nuts and rim condition |
|
Steering play and linkages, ball joints, tie rods, shock absorbers, springs, and wheel bearings |
|
Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, reversing lights, and number plate lights |
|
Windscreen cracks and chips in driver’s line of sight, wiper blade condition and washer function |
|
Doors, bonnet, boot, sharp edges, seat belts, horn, mirrors, and general structural integrity |
|
Exhaust system integrity, excessive smoke, and emissions compliance |
If your vehicle passes all items, we issue the Certificate of Roadworthiness on the spot. If defects are found, we provide you with a clear written report itemising exactly what needs to be rectified before the certificate can be issued. You are not obligated to have us complete the repairs — you can take the report to another repairer if you prefer. However, if you choose to have us carry out the work, we can often complete repairs and re-test on the same day, saving you a return visit.
How the RWC process works at our Cranbourne workshop
Getting your roadworthy certificate with us is a simple, transparent process:
- Book your inspection
Call us on 03 8752 4599 or drop in to arrange a booking. Same-day and next-day appointments are usually available. Let us know the vehicle’s make, model, and year so we can allocate the right time.
- Drop your vehicle off
Bring your vehicle to our Cranbourne West workshop at the agreed time. The inspection itself typically takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on vehicle type.
- Inspection carried out
Our licensed inspector works through the full VicRoads checklist, assessing every required safety item. We do not cut corners and we do not pass vehicles that have genuine safety defects.
- Result and report
If the vehicle passes, you receive your Certificate of Roadworthiness on the spot. If defects are found, you receive a detailed written report clearly listing each item that needs attention.
- Repairs and re-test (if needed)
If you choose to have us fix the defects, we carry out the required repairs and re-inspect the vehicle — often on the same day. Once all items pass, your certificate is issued.
- Certificate issued
Your Certificate of Roadworthiness is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. Use it to complete the vehicle sale or registration transfer through VicRoads within that window.
Tips to help your vehicle pass first time
While we can’t guarantee any vehicle will pass its inspection without seeing it first, there are a number of simple things you can check before bringing your car in. Addressing obvious issues in advance often means your vehicle passes first time, saving you the time and hassle of a return visit.
- Check that all lights are working — headlights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and number plate lights. A blown globe is a common and easy-to-miss fail point.
- Check your wiper blades — worn or streaky blades can cause a fail if they impair the driver’s vision.
- Check your tyre tread depth and look for any visible cracking or damage on the sidewalls.
- Ensure all doors, including the boot and bonnet, open, close, and latch properly.
- Check that your horn works.
- Look at your windscreen for any cracks or chips that fall within the driver’s line of sight.
- Make sure your seat belts retract and latch properly on all seating positions.
- If your car pulls to one side when braking, or the brake pedal feels soft, book a brake inspection before your RWC.
If you are unsure about any of these items before your inspection, just let our team know when you book. We are happy to take a quick look and give you an honest assessment before the formal inspection begins.
Selling or buying a car? What you need to know about RWCs
If you are selling a registered vehicle in Victoria, the law requires you to provide the buyer with a current roadworthy certificate before ownership can be transferred. The certificate must have been issued within the past 30 days. As the seller, this is your responsibility — not the buyer’s.
If you are buying a used car, always check that the RWC provided is current, that it was issued by a licensed inspection station, and that the certificate number and vehicle details match. A roadworthy certificate does not mean the car has no other mechanical issues — it only confirms the safety-related items passed at the time of inspection. For that reason, we strongly recommend pairing a roadworthy inspection with a pre-purchase mechanical inspection if you are buying privately.
Our workshop carries out both roadworthy certificates and pre-purchase vehicle inspections in Cranbourne and the surrounding area. If you are buying a car locally, we can carry out both in a single visit.
